I always enjoy Tamora Pierce. She has such a way with making her characters feel like real people. This book is no exception. Alanna is a fabulous character, with such depth and real feelings that you can't help but root for her. I love this series and can't wait to go on to the next one!

This book is very much a product of its time (the 80s) for both good and ill. Its the kind of book I would have adored as a kid, and I don't have the nostalgia to rate this really high, reading it as an adult.
