I really enjoyed the aspect of people being forced together who don't know each other and how both personal and cultural backgrounds influence how they all interact with each other. these kinds of scenarios that are built to create friction make for some of my favorite story devices it really forces the characters to define themselves and develop. I also connected with the different languages and how they map onto different ways of interacting with the world around you, what a culture values etc. Its maybe a tad too slow at times but generally a joy to submerge myself in.

This book was a little high on philosophy, which I find  enjoyable every now and then.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! Picked it up and the ended up finishing it all in the same day, even though I definitely meant to do other things in the last few hours. I was particularly delighted by the focus on culture and language world-building, as well as how these transferred across various different groups--and how they didn't. The work on finding a balance between what works for certain characters across different cultures was great to read.

But, of course, this book is about something different at its heart. It tells of music and its power, but also just how far a person can go when they find a place--and people--to belong to. It's not without its dangers or challenges, but the friendships (and, arguably, found family relations) built up in the book take a key focus and definitely kept me engaged throughout. For anyone looking to read about found family with a plot and some incredible world-building, look no further than this book.
