*2018: The Year of Leaving Written Reviews*
I liked this book, the story was quite compelling and I found myself drawn in to this mysterious world of art, something that I hadn't given much thought to before.

It was a nice story but it did drag on a bit in the middle - I feel there was one character and their plotline that could've been edited out entirely without effecting the rest of the narrative - and it was a fair bit denser than I anticipated, hence the 3 star review.

I picked this up on a sale table in December 2019. Once I started reading, I realized I had started it awhile ago but dnf. This time I kept reading in fits and starts. I enjoyed Annie, the main character and the artworks that are also characters. At times I found the plot became over complicated.

Trash bro. My favorite chapters were the ones from the perspective of the inanimate object, that's how little I cared about the characters.

A different sort of story. One of the highlights is having the painting as one of the narrators.

I really liked how this one started, and about 62 pages in, I was quite excited about how it'd turn out. It promised a lot of intrigue and an interesting plot line. Then it started to fail and it wasn't just the shaky prose. The whole book, in a way, just fell apart (figuratively), and all because one person couldn't decide on where they wanted to go with this. The key to any well written book - it's author.
It's like Hannah Rothschild couldn't decide what she wanted to do with an amazing storyline - did she want to satirize it? Romanticise it? Humorise it? Was this going to be the next bestselling thriller? Exactly what did she want to do with it? Somewhere, out of her own confusion, and inability to really give this book a consistent shape, or clear direction, she managed to create a weird hybrid chimera like creature - one that's mildly appealing enough for a second glance and a one time read, but not enough to really hold a reader's interest enough, to not get them to start speed reading. Worse though, it doesn't make one want to read anything else by the same author. Sad really, because it all started with so much of promise.
Even the shaky writing, is not due to any lack of writing skills on the author's part, but just a reflection of the 'confusion'. There's sudden satire, and then something serious, then something romantic, and it is so loosely woven that there's nothing seamless about the narrative. You constantly keep wondering that where is she going with this? Is this a love story? Is it a love story in a thriller? Is it a satire on the world of art and the upper echelons of society? What exactly is it?
Again, I would love for someone to pick this one up, rewrite it with the kind of clarity it deserves, and turn it into the masterpiece it so richly deserves to be. It really has the makings of one - just as long as the author doesn't try to turn it into a multi genre masterpiece.
Read if you like or skip it. Either way, it won't matter much. (Yup, it's that much of an inimical read).

I found this to be a charming and interesting read, although the ending was slightly rushed and unsatisfying. However, I'd still recommend it as it has plenty of twists and turns.

Super fun read! Having just finished an art history course in London, I particularly felt like I connected with a lot of the material! It was a bit slow moving with many different stories being told simultaneously. The end 1/3 of the novel however is what really gripped me! It was fun to see all the stories intersect and wrap up in the end.

DNF at 9 hours into the audiobook. I really enjoyed the book in the beginning, it was interesting but it just started to get boring and I eventually lost interest.
