It was real good y'all. Emezi is heckin' talented and this book was gorgeous. It's loosely mirrored on Chronicle of a Death Foretold and now I want to reread that book too. This book is really sweet and sad and there are so many teenagers and I love them.

Basically, if you haven't tried Emezi's work yet, you definitely should and this book is a good place to start. It's short and super readable and worth picking up.
inspiring lighthearted sad

I am a big Akwaeke Emezi fan, so I read their books without paying attention to the blurb. This is a sad, romantic slice of life book set in Nigeria, exploring themes of sexuality, gender. I considered this a slow burn, focused on main character coming to terms with their feelings and identify as the people around them explore and express themselves.

Prose was ok, I expected more as I ADORED freshwater - and felt that they proved themselves a powerful writer when it comes to the body. This book isn't written in the same style and I think I was a little let down by that.

I finished it, I enjoyed it, but I didn't want to read to again so for me it doesn't meet the 4+ rating.
