I think a lot of the book is written more like a Chinese history and culture information session than a story. I don't understand why there are so many untranslated phrases in dialogue which then have explanations of their meaning afterward. Just translate it. We get it, you speak Chinese.
This might not be as frustrating for someone who doesn't speak Chinese and would like to learn random facts, but it broke the immersion a lot of the time. Often, long explanations were shoved in between dialogue which made me lose track of what was happening and who was speaking.
It is well-written, but the characters felt cartoonish at times.
