A little repetitive in parts and sometimes read like a list of facts but mostly a really informative and interesting read. Great narration

Certainly an interesting read and ultimately I would recommend it as a good starting point for those interested in Northern history. This book is to my mind easily at its best when it is examining the lives of the people of the time, particularly the occasional snippets of the working people from different ages. Unfortunately those are quite few and far between, and for large sections this book falls into the common trap of listing successions of kings/governments and where they did or didn't travel to, and loses it's focus on the interesting evidence of the day to day life of the people of the north.
