Initially interesting as an historical document on Victorian era taboos and porn, it gets repetitive and then just plain disgusting as it veers into and tries to gloss over child rape.

if you saw a notification of me having read this no you didn't

(also if I ever have to read about a man calling his dick "Mr. Pego" ever again i will join the nearest convent and never take another book in my hand again except the holy bible)

Having recently seen a play purportedly based on this, I was expecting much more of a narrative (there isn't any, except in the introductory chapters) and certainly nothing so very graphic.

This reads as a badly written, unedited draft collection of vignettes; interesting, I suppose, as a rare example of such writing from its time, but little else.

Interesting as a piece of historical literature, but as someone else said: dead dove: do not eat.

Published in 1881, it's all gay sex. Funny, eye opening, and surprisingly easy reading.

Okay, so I read about this author, Jack Saul, in the book "Bad Gays". It sounded unusual, so I thought I would see if it was still in print. I was shocked to discover it was in our public library, but once I checked out the book, I was even more shocked from the writing, and from the fact that this was written in 1881. It is listed as "erotic fiction" but it's mostly really hardcore, with a couple of educational essays at the end. I suppose it's important that we know these things existed 140 years ago, but still... Maybe I'm a bit more prudish than I thought...

Is this "good" erotica? Absolutely not. It is often times disgusting filled with some of the basest and most vile forms of sexual perversions that humans engage in (namely the extensive pedophilia).
But, on some level I appreciate it for that fact because the cursory similarity to what you can find on ao3 or literotica in the 21st century just underlines how people are people are people since the beginning of time. In fact, the author attempts to make the same connection to the Romans in the "essays" at the end.

Pure victorian smut. Read this with my friends out loud with a Gin. Great for providing an insight to the Mary Anns of victorian society
