Multiple perspectives + flawed characters = A good beach read.

I saw the movie-version of "In Her Shoes" a couple of winters ago while up in NH skiing with Amanda. (2 more weekends 'til this year's x-country NH ski adventure!!) So, going into this book, I knew what the story line was. I generally prefer reading books before seeing them in movie form as I don't like to have the story spoiled. The book was a cute chick lit story about 2 sisters but nothing out of the ordinary. I prefer Weiner's Good in Bed to this book.(3.5 out of 5)

Brought me out of a long reading-hibernation. Jennifer Weiner's work is fantastic. After I read this I had to read everything she has written. Still in the process, but I will always count her as a favorite.

I honestly liked the movie better. Both women were less annoying and more believable in that version. I do like that Weiner writes smart and competent heroines, though!

When I first started this book, there were times where it was absolutely a 2* read. I couldn't stand Maggie. She was just an awful and unsympathetic character. However, Weiner really managed to turn things around and by the end I was really rooting for her and wanted nothing but good things for her. I guess that's the hallmark of a good author. I can't remember the last time I read a book where my rating jumped like this one did - I went from hating the book to loving it and being truly upset that it ended. My only other critique is the random cameo of Cannie, a character from Weiner's other books. That was a bit of a weird self-insert.

Overall though, I really loved this book. I've found that Weiner's earlier books just don't match her current style and her ability to create great characters and truly heartwarming moments, but this seems to be a piece that reflects her transition period from her early work to her more current works.
