So contemporary romances just don't have the stakes that historicals do, when the barriers to the happily ever after are often firmly rooted in social expectations that are so heavy and have such drastic consequences. There is literally nothing keeping the hero and heroine of this novel from being together. And it makes it boring.

I picked this up because the first one in the series was recommended on Book Riot, but it was checked out. I might try that one before I write off this author and/or cowboy romances in general, but this one wasn't as fun as I had hoped.

This was alright. As an erotica it was pretty good, but I was hoping for a little more emotional depth. The characters seemed to advance emotionally without a lot of page time. It felt a lot like love through sex.

However, I'm on a cowboy kick and I'm looking forward to the upcoming relationships so I'll keep reading this series. (Also the sexy scenes are very well done, I must say).

Why was it called Saddled and Spurred? Were there even any horses in the whole book?

wow a great hot story with fun quirks and interesting plot twists... an interesting group of wyoming cowboys and cowgirls, wonderful small town lives and friends, and love and passion all add up to an intriguing and heartwarming love story, with all the heat, passion, and sexual escapades one would expect in in a lorelei james novel. dying beyond imagine for the next one in the series. Seriously the only thing better will be Celia's story which must be coming right?

The book felt very disjointed: at first it was a romance novel. Great! Along it chugs. Then the hero and heroine hook up, and it turned into erotica: endless sex scenes, or brief overviews of sex scenes (which just felt awkward, like, why do we need to know this?), while the emotional threads of the novel basically dwindled into nonexistent nothingness. Then it remembered it was a romance novel again, and Everything Happened - like, all the interpersonal relationships that were ignored while the main characters were boinking like bunnies came to a head, plot lines resumed, and characters remembered that they had motivations and personalities.

Omg Bran Turner. Bran FREAKING Turner! He made this book a 5 star read for me. The author made him a strong, protective cowboy but he was also vulnerable and unsure of himself at times and I loved seeing that in a guy. (There wasn't too much, just enough to make him mess something up and have to grovel. I love a good grovel!) Harper was a really well written heroine too. She gave up so much for her family and when it all started to come crashing down, she continued to try and hold it together the best she could. When her heart, at one point, did shatter, she didn't just pack up and run. At least, not permanently.

And the wooing at the end by Bran? The karaoke?! I cracked up. And let's not forget the fainting goats and the bunnies. There were so many times i laughed out loud in this book. And yeah, the sexy times are hot as in so smokin hot I was waiting for the book to catch fire. Even though I got this (and the first in the series) from the library, this is definitely a series I will be buying so I can re-read again, and again, and again. *sigh* Bran...

Alright, off to hunt down the next in the series!

Saddled and Spurred
3 Stars

Desperate for a job, Harper Masterson, former beauty queen and nail technician, finds herself working as a hired hand on Bran Turner's cattle ranch. With her strong work ethic and willingness to learn, Harper impresses the skeptical Bran who soon finds himself incapable of resisting Harper's many charms.

An intriguing premise that has the potential to develop into an entertaining office type romance with numerous conflicts based on Harper's inexperience, Bran's bias and the community's reactions. Unfortunately, what emerges is nothing more than a sex-fest.

While Harper and Bran's characters and backgrounds are fleshed out well and provide excellent material for an opposites attract or love/hate relationship, this fails to materialize and there is very little development of their romance other than the numerous sex scenes, which ultimately merge one into the other.

The secondary storylines involving other characters feel like filler in between bouts of sex and it is difficult to care about any of the townsfolk. That said, some of the best scenes are at the local beauty parlor with the local biddies providing minor comic relief with their somewhat raunchy comments and advice. Sadly, this fails to compensate for the lack of story.
In sum, this is my first Lorelei James novel and I might give another one a try at some time but it isn't a priority.
