I stand with 2012 Lorina’s review of 3 stars. This wasn’t spectacular and I wanted to throttle Yelena most of the time but eh. Happy for her and her horse girl era I guess. Also, the best line in this book was spoken by a horse.

What a great series! I loved this book even more than the first! With more history given about the magic system and political nature of the society it just drew me in with every page! Not to mention all the intriguing mysteries! Great read all around.

2024 reread
This was so much fun to dive back into, especially considering the beautiful edition I got to read! This is also where it really picks up, although it takes a sec, then it’s off! Yelena is such a badass and the magic system is so cool and interesting! Can’t wait to continue.

I read this in 3 days. That is fast for me. Very plot driven - I couldn't put it down. However - certain key elements to the story I found to be annoying. I feel as if I need some time to digest whether I like the book or not.

 I don't know how many times I have read this book/series at this point, but it still fills me with all the joy of the first read through. Despite knowing everything that would happen, I still found myself not wanting to put the book down multiple times.

I love the characters, I love the setting, I love the fast moving plot and the intricacies of the world building.
I squealed, I laughed, I shouted. I annotated all my unhinged thoughts. I honestly had the best time with this (as I always d0).

I will say that this read through did have this feeling much more of a ya vibe than I remembered, as this was clearly written with a younger adult audience in mind. However, I still love it all the same. The difficult/dark topics addressed are done with respect and gentleness, making this a wonderful fantasy reading experience.
