Book Review: A World Undone: The Story of the Great War, 1914 to 1918 by GJ Meyer - a comprehensive story of a tragic war. Much of what I thought I knew about World War I (which was not much) was wrong. It was a horrible tragedy of a war with 20 million wounded, 10 million soldier and 7 million civilians killed. And the war did much to bankrupt Europe. Without WWI the rest of history would be very different.

I can tell this is a great book on WW1. But it is a bit over my head right now. Will revisit it again
A great book that breaks down the First World War into six sections that each cover half of a year, except for the last two, which more or less take on a full year each. Very informative, and it's piqued my interest in more than one area.
A substantive overview of the war-- insightful, interesting, and terrifying. As much a treatise on egos as it is on foreign policy. If you had to read one book of this war, this is it.
Awfully good at doing what it sets out to do, and horrifying of course. Rather abrupt on the end of the war.
The best general one-volume history of WWI that I have read. It is more Euro-centric, but Meyer does delve into battle fronts in the Middle East and the east. I love his background segments at the end of each chapter that drills down on a particular topic.
The book stays on strategy and when he gets into battles, it hits the right tone as Meyer doesn't get bogged down in long battle details. You really get a sense of the vast tragedy and waste this war placed on the earth. Highly recommend.

Ok I listened to this and had to sit on it and low key still don’t quite understand so I’m also listening to The Guns In August but like?!? it sounds like folks talked themselves into war bc they didn’t have enough imagination to conjure a different o solution to all their problems?
I admittedly read very little non-fiction, I unfortunately get bogged down in the detail and lack of story and thus restrict myself to specific subjects that I find fascinating. WWI is one of those.
I didn't realize that I knew so little about WWI until I read this book.
It seems impossible to understand WWII without knowing this war and the politics that started and ended it.
For a war that had and has so many repercussions for Europe, it amazes me that I didn't know more.
The author did a fantastic job of creating an overall history of WWI. While I'm sure the history of this war could only be fully and comprehensively told in a minimum 6 volume set of 800 page books, this one is a very good option for a shorter version.
