So.......it's a science fiction mystery? Not really. We know reasonably early on who did it. The question is why. And unlike a normal mystery, we aren't given clues to help us figure out the answer ourselves but instead are left to wait until the author chooses to tell us the answer. Not so much fun for the mystery reader. And the title character, well he is a pompous jerk, exasperating in his obliviousness to the world around him and the strife he is causing others. It was not a book I could get in to.

I re-read this after watching the recent tv show. When watching the show I was surprised how little of the plot was familiar. Eventually I realized that all of the plot was unfamiliar because it was not actually based on the books (which I was glad for: why do I read & watch the same media over and over when there are already too many things). However, it made me want to re-read the book and see what it was like.
Huh. This an odd little duck of a book. The first 15% is practically incoherent to follow until you know what is going on, and then you have to go back to it. The plot doesn't actually kick in until 50% through the book. So this book isn't really the fast read that you'd expect it to be. The plot is rather convoluted, and even the author admitted that the ending didn't actually make sense when they went back to it years later.
So, those prevent this from being a 5 start book.
However, it is still a fun read, and there is classic Douglas Adams humor in it.

The plot of this was a bit too nonsensical and hard to follow for me. I get that that’s the point but even so. I did like the characters though: the conversations between Richard and Dirk made me chuckle. As with in the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, Douglas Adam’s writing is very funny and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoyed that- I just don’t think it is quite as good as that series.
