This was an odd read for me - I found I needed to digest the book in small chunks.
What I loved was the classic, piercing Douglas Adams wit - the combination of absurd and incredibly perceptive.
What I found difficult was the plot - perhaps the central time-travel narrative of the book confused things, but I found it a bit odd, and suspect it's the kind of thing one needs to re-read to understand how everything linked together. (Holistically, if you will!) There was no one character for the reader to travel through the book with entirely - Richard would be the closest, but I didn't really get to know him.
A bit slow at the beginning, a bit more interesting at the end as everything comes together, and I do wish I knew what became of that poor horse!

I love Douglas Adams' books.. They are SO RANDOM, which is my kind of funny, so I found them hilarious! They contain a lot of spaceship/science talk which for the most part doesn't make sense, but if you have any background in physics and can understand what he's implying, it makes it all the funnier. But no matter your background, you will finish with a big fat "WHAT THE...??"
I've meant to read this for over 20 years, and with the tv series coming soon, I thought I better read it. So glad I did. If you liked the Hitchhiker's Guide then you will enjoy this as well. But then again, you probably didn't wait as long as I did to read this.
p. 19 - Richard continued, "What I mean is that if you really want to understand something, the best way is to try and explain it to someone else. That forces you to sort it out in your own mind. And the more slow and dim-witted your pupil, the more you have to break things down into more and more simple ideas. And that's really the essence of programming. By the time you've sorted out a complicated idea into little steps that even a stupid machine can deal with, you've certainly learned something about it yourself. The teacher usually learns more than the pupil. Isn't that true?"

I really did not enjoy this book. It was not a pleasant reading experience. Dirk Gently is a massive douchebag and I just wanted to get him out of the plot altogether. Without him the book could have been way more fun. A thousand year old Cambridge professor with a time machine who travels the universe with a fun and interesting companion. Wait, did I just describe series 10 of Doctor Who? If you excuse me, I‘m going to watch Doctor Who now.

A very quirky book about time traveling, ghosts, and friendship. If you didn't get (or haven't read) Douglas Adams Hitchhikers Guide books skip this one. On the other hand if you like Hitchhikers Guide and enjoy Monty Python you'll enjoy this book. Hardly anything makes sense if taken separately, but together this book weaves a wildly unique sort of detective book.
