3.5 stars. Classic Adams. Witty and fun, smart and original, but also a little overcomplicated and hard to understand in the end.

I have a vague recollection that, when I first (and last) read this I was vaguely disappointed, although having re-read it, I think I may be getting it confused with Good Omens (which probably also warrants a re-read, but is no longer in my collection). Of course, that recollection may also halve been due to recognising that this was more than a little bit of an amalgamation of some of Adams's Doctor Who ideas, and me being a but miffed about it, for some reason that I can't remember.
Anyway, this time (and possibly last time) I found it more than a little amusing. It's no HHGTTG (what is?) but it raised more than the odd chuckle and eyebrow. Yes, it's a bit dated and OK I had to look up it's Wikipedia entry to actually twig how our cast actually saved humanity, but it's an easy and entertaining enough read. And, I've lived through the time it was written, so dial phones, video recorders and the then almost burgeoning home computing environment adds a touch of nostalgia.

I like the Dirk Gently books, but they've never connected with me the way the Hitchhiker's Guide series did. This one, in particular, just seems busy... too many ideas thrown at the page at once, all of them interesting but none of them really given enough room to breathe or grow adequately as we finally make our way to the rushed finish, which just recycles ideas from some of his Doctor Who scripts. It has its moments, but it could be so much more.
Also, how many adaptations of Dirk on TV and radio have there been now and NONE of them have cast Matt Berry as Dirk? The man *is* Dirk Gently as written on the page.

I loved this book. It was funny, smart, incredibly good and did I mention funny? I was often laughing out loud in so many moments. I really enjoyed all the characters and their interconnectedness!
