I didn’t really connect to the plot or the characters, but I still ended up really liking this. Adams shifts effortlessly between hilarious pseudophilosophy and genuinely beautiful prose in a wholly original piece of weird fiction.
This is one of those books that is hilarious, confusing, and - if I had to sum it up in one word - a little ridiculous.
This is yet another book that I would not have read except for university, and one that I would only recommend with reservations. It you are one for an absurdist book that doesn't quite make sense, then this book is for you! On the other hand, while I laughed several times, I have to admit I had no idea what was going on half the time. I get the feeling that that is the point.

When you think of this book in it's parts, its not supposed to make sense. But then Douglas Adams takes the laws of physics, logic and literature and politely asks them to move a little and hence you have Dirk Gently. A+. Would definitely recommend. 7/10.
If comparing to Hitchhiker's, I'd say it is definitely more grounded. Hitchhikers is a book that tells you to take logic and shove a nuke up it's ass and blast it in the core of a dying star to create a godless universe where such a book can exist. Dirk is...tamer.

This was the most absurd book I've ever read in my life. The majority of it was filled with unnecessary words in the attempt at wit. It passed the point of funny and witty. It became annoying and overdone. I forced myself through it for a prompt. Otherwise I wouldn't have finished it.
