What can I say? It's Douglas Adams. Just as creative, quirky, and ludicrous as you ought to expect. Not quite as good as Hitchhiker's Guide, but that's setting a very high bar indeed. The plot reminds me of a Doctor Who episode Adams wrote, "City of Death." Dirk Gently is very like the Doctor.
The last line of this book makes me want to believe that Dirk Gently or Svlad Cjelli, is in some way connected to The Doctor. There is the fact that both go around trying to solve things, both have traveled through time, both are interested in the impossible, and, of course, as per the last line of this book - saved the human race from total extinction with no charge.
I'm starting to become less and less thrilled with Douglas Adams. Oh well. Sometimes I think I'm not cut out for British whimsy.
the rating dropped from a 4 to a 3.5 because of the last 50 pages or so, because the time travel/alien/monk plot felt shoved together at the last minute. i also would have loved more of the gordon way plot. but this sincerely felt like a project of love from douglas adams and i loved it so much. i grew up reading the hitchhiker books and this book was full of nostalgia that i needed during quarantine.

Really enjoyable while still managing to not make sense. Some things really confused me. Entertaining nonetheless.

Very Adams - if you enjoyed The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, you'll probably like this too.
