Tried really hard to like this. (I had read it before but not in years; turns out the funny parts I remembered were the only funny parts.) Douglas Adams is one of my favourite writers of all time and his work is extremely formative to my sense of humour and to how I see the world in general, but this book just isn't very good.
Other DNA books that I didn't like the first time (eg. the last two Hitchhiker's books) have grown on me, but I don't think this one will.

Hilarious and brilliant. A wonderful read that ties everything together magically at the end.
I have accidentally read a lot of time travel stories in the last 12 months. This may not be my favourite Douglas Adams novel, but it is a very good time travel story.
There is no need to try and explain the plot, because there are so many elements fused together, but I enjoyed my little trip into the world of peculiar British humour.

While this book completely filled my expectations of humor and strangeness (it is, after all, Douglas Adams), I was not prepared for how moving it was. It was a lovely little novel and I am so happy that I read it, and I highly recommend it to anyone who has ever enjoyed any snippet of anything by Adams.
I love Douglas Adams and his type of humor, so obviously I loved the book. the only reason this only gets four stars is that Dirk Gently, aka the reason why I wanted to read this book (and like the main reason you should want to read the book), only showed up halfway through the book, which was a huge disappointment. I also think I might like the Netflix TV show a bit better than the book, simply because it's a bit more action packed and a bit more coherent, while keeping the abstract humor and the characters (actually it only really keeps Dirk and adds scores of amazing characters but eh).

It's been a while, but I remember really enjoying this one in my teens. I liked it better than the book version of Hitchhiker's Guide actually, because it had more of a plot. (The radio play is the way to go for Hitchhiker's Guide, IMO.)
I laughed (a lot). I had to go back an reread parts to understand what was going on. I felt really bad for some characters. And I was kind of confused by the dramatic and quick ending.
That about sums up my experience with this book.
I have long adored Douglas Adams' "Hitchhiker's Guide" trilogy and my husband has been suggesting I give Dirk Gently a try. It wasn't quite what I expected, while at the same time being a very Adams-esque book. It was hsyterical and I frequently laughed out loud at the story and at the ridiculous things people said.
My biggest complaint is the ending. How did we go from trying to solve a murder to saving humanity from a ghost-alien? That jump was quick and left my head spinning a bit. When I expressed my complaints to my father-in-law (a dedicated Adams fan), he said "He's a holistic detective. Of course he doesn't solve normal crimes the normal way." And yeah, I get that. But still....
This was a lovely (and bizarre) book and I highly recommend it to any sci-fi reader.
