Loved the first 100 pages. I put it down with about 50 to go, though, because what happened was horrifying and unnecessary.

3.5 out of 5. This was a quirky novel and I tend to like quirky. Swamplandia! was well-written but didn't pull me in the way quirky books usually do. The tale was quite dark and the characters sad & misguided... but I didn't quite buy some of the events in the book despite the purported magical-realism factor.

Great book, check the content warnings. Rating would have been higher if the sudden SA hadn't occurred.

I finished this all at once after weeks of dragging. That is essentially how the book felt and the adrenaline in my body also felt rushed, like it came on all at once and too much at once. Also, trigger warning? An awful awful violent scene so near the end of the book that I felt like did not need to be there.

Karen Russell is the first author I'd read that think accurately captured the voice of the turn if the 21st century American teenager. Apparently a lot of people didn't like the world of darkness story line but I love it because it seems so authentic.

just finished it and i’m fully nauseated. honestly read a bit like a miyazaki movie just in that it’s so dark and surreal and also full of love.

also just such incredible writing, literally driving me insane
