This book is not only about the life and work of J Dilla but also gives a lot of context in many ways - from music history and music theory to music business, label politics etc.
We also learn about artists he worked with during his lifetime and those who made music in the following years, heavily influenced by his style.
From the huge directory of sources it’s obvious the author has a scientific background, but still the book is exciting and an easy read.

Absorbing, multifaceted, and riveting. Portrays a very nuanced portrait of a man who I and many others would say is one of the most important musicians of the last few decades. Great reading for anyone interested in music

This is an exceptional work of biography, musicology, and cultural history. Not only does Charnas ground the work of J. Dilla within its proper, underknown context, but he also manages to deliver a warts-and-all depiction of a flawed genius. Dilla Time also features numerous discussions of the contributions Dilla made to the rhythms, feel, and tone of modern hip-hop, soul, and dance music. Before reading this, I had heard Stakes is High, Donuts, Slum Village, and a few other select tracks that were famously attributed to Dilla. Now, I'm well-aware of how influential and important James Dewitt Yancey was to progressing the artistry both Hip-Hop and programmed musical generally.
