My husband has recently started doing K-9 SAR volunteer work here in Central IL. It seems a little is different between the work they train for here and the work the author does down in TX. But he is working with a team, so that's the same. Just the dogs and handlers here don't do much in the way of disaster work so they don't do too much of that part of the training. My husband's dog (really more our dog b/c she is a house dog that lives with us) is a German Shepherd who has a very different personality from the golden in this book. Puzzle seems much more able to relax than Kona, though Kona is definitely working on it.

I really wanted to hear more about their training and their searches. The author never really talks much about HOW Puzzle learns to do the searches, which is something I'd have at least like to have heard mentioned. Especially scent discrimination work (Find THIS). Additionally, I wasn't really clear what her medical problem was, which if you are going to talk about it for a whole chapter in a book of this length, then I think maybe share more? Something wrong with the kidneys. Cancer? IDK. Did she recover? Or was she just feeling better for now? IDK. I get that it is medical and personal, but I mean, this is a memoir type of book, so isn't sharing kind of the point?
