I continued to think about this book long after I finished reading it. An interesting take on dystopian/utopian fiction

I randomly picked up this book in an airport bookstore as it was recently re-released with a new foreword. Shocked to know it was written so long ago, but the relevant nature of its content is quite astonishing. Recommended.

The characters were interesting and unique, as was the world-building. However, I feel like more hope should have been written into the time travel scenes, and the two possible futures could have been connected more.

The main character irritated me somewhat. She seemed to have no appreciation for the fact that she was being visited by a literal time traveller and just used the time traveller for amusement and a break from everyday life, never really caring about the woman’s own life. She also kept lamenting over how terrible her life was without doing anything to change it. The only thing she seems motivated to do is to get out of the hospital. She seemingly holds no trauma from her severe past abuse or the brutal separation from her only daughter - after beating her, I might add. Overall, an unlikeable character - and not in a good way.

Overall, the whole book had a depressing aura, which made it a difficult read, but I still feel like I walked away with something important, probably because you rarely encounter this sort of honesty in books anymore.

Amazing read, highly recommend.
