"Why is it beautiful simply to find your own questions?" So wonders the narrator of one story in Elizabeth Tallent's introspective yet clear-eyed collection exploring the ever-shifting topography of human relationships. The narrator's sentiment - that uncertainty provides a kind of pleasure - is echoed throughout Mendocino Fire, which revels in the gap between past and future, childhood and adulthood, desire and regret. Described by Tallent, with her knack for gently cutting observations and epically long sentences, it feels less like limbo than like flight.
