So wonders the narrator of one story in Elizabeth Tallent's introspective yet clear-eyed collection exploring the ever-shifting topography of human relationships. The narrator's sentiment - that uncertainty provides a kind of pleasure - is echoed throughout Mendocino Fire, which revels in the gap between past and future, childhood and adulthood, desire and regret.
