Waiting to read the second book
!Spoilers ahead!
I loved the writing and the plot, the idea behind it & the world building. However!!
I felt like the character progression was going through a rollercoaster. It felt like they were not true to their own values and beliefs, and I recoiled at some of the romantic scenes because they were unwarranted and felt forced. Especially when it came to Zafira, it felt like her character was all over the place and she was constantly unsure of her values, which I can understand to an extent. But she would go from 0 to 100 in span of seconds all the way until the end of the book.
I think Hafsah Faizal has a great storytelling when it does not come to romance. The way she describes platonic relationships made me gasp most of the time. But the romantic ones felt a bit off. I wish Deen stayed as brother/friend figure to Zafira. His death felt unwarranted. I don't know. I felt like I didn't connect to the rest of the cast except Zafira, Nasir and Altair.
With the plot, I think there were way too many twists that came out of nowhere. I think some twists should have a stronger build-up and more foreshadowing, but some twists felt like they were done for the sake of the twist.
Regardless of all that, I thought the writing was phenomenal. I'm excited to read the second book.
