"how was such unfairness to the best of souls possible?"
after a month of suffering at the hand of my adamant reading slump, i can finally mark this book, or any book, as 'read' - i've forgotten what a freeing feeling this was!
the fault was entirely my own, though, and certainly not the book's. because what a fun time.
the vibrancy and lushness of arabian culture was the glaring highlight of this story. it provided such a broad scale of characters and it was an absolute delight to read about! i had the warmest feeling while reading -especially in the beginning- with all the rich descriptions. i have heard that some people struggled with the arabic words but that wasn't a big problem for me, maybe because turkish and arabic have similarities?
i did, however, think that the romance developed unrealistically quickly - and maybe the entire plot. the beginning was leisurely and eased us into this interesting land of arawiya, providing solid back stories for everything. then the middle came and kind of swept the rug from under me. i didn't yet have a rooted love for either of the characters, and i feel like the formalities were skipped a little too heartily. we went from the characters being out to murder each other to experiencing crackling magnetism in a blink. there was a general feeling of confusion and uncertainty in regards to their relationship the whole way through. they were both so lost and unsure of themselves, both as a unit and on their own.
nasir in particular felt like he had little to really pull me to him. we only really saw his personality through his own gaze: he was all he said he was (a lapdog, a monster, an assassin, a prisoner...). he hid his self from everyone around him. the good in him was definitely there, we could see, we could feel, but he never really showed it. as someone who is unable to do anything without someone being there to push me, i would be hypocritical to judge his incapability of rebellion. my criticism stands that he embodied his origin story and definitive traits so well that it felt like he was nothing outside of it. let me explain: he was the prince of death, hated by his father, feared by all else, he was mysterious, and he was desperate to be loved. he didn't venture outside of this. i'm not sure if that makes sense at all, but i'm hopeful for more concrete character development from him in the next book!
shoutout to yasmine for carrying the first half of the book. it's extremely gratifying to witness such a raw and gorgeous female friendship in young adult fiction. it was a pleasure accompanying the zumra on their journey to uncover the lost jawarat!

Damn I was so looking forward to loving this. I appreciated the representation, the world building and lore very interesting. But I just couldn't get behind the plot and characters, not the writing style which was too repetitive and poetic for me. The pacing was pretty slow, it felt like nothing happened for the whole middle of the book. I think this added to my constant confusion while reading. I didn't care for any of the characters, Altair was maybe the only one that stood out among them all and I'd have loved more Kifah and Yasmine but Kifah was hardly given any of the spotlight and Yasmine of course was back home so not part of the plot.
Zafira's and Nasir's attraction was so ill-paced or oddly handled.Zafira especially being attracted to Nasir early on was strange to me when she suspected he to be Deen's killer. I think that time when they faced the Lion the first time would have been the better spot to plan that spark.
I wanted to be so much more into this book, the world building and magoc system so intriguing!!

Prachtige setting, had zo goed kunnen zijn als het niet zo langdradig was. Plot is bijna niet bestaand en wat er wel gebeurt lijkt op elk ander YA boek ooit.

I don't know... I was almost 10 chapters into the first book and it's just not grasping my attention. It's my second time to try and read this series but it's just not for me.

This is what it feels like to be represented in a book and it made my heart so happy. 9/10⭐️
