Lovely illustrations, and altogether a very charming, if somewhat bittersweet, book.

Talk about a surreal experience. There is something almost tragically sad about this book even with its sweet message.

The art is classic and expressive. It really does move the story and tug at heartstrings.

Bluffton tells a fictional story as its mains but nonfictional as the background. You get to see the Keatons and learn a bit about their real life.

I am so glad that I just casually picked this up.

Semi-biographical story about the famous vaudevillian, Buster Keaton, aka "The Human Mop, and the summers he spent in Muskegon, Michigan from 1908-1938. Phelan spins the story by introducing the main fictional character, Henry, who is in awe of the vaudevillians and aspires to learn the trade, like Buster. The boys spend fun summers together while the circus travels across the world during the rest of the year. Phelan weaves some darker themes into the story, touching lightly on child abuse with Buster's father, Joe. Eventually, Buster leaves the family act and moves on to showbusiness and becomes an actor. Henry grows up and opens a movie theater, marries his childhood sweetheart and shows some of the movies Buster has performed in, such as The General and Cops. I am intrigued to watch these films now and learn more about Buster Keaton and his life. Interesting graphic novel with comedy interspersed throughout!

I love historical fiction as a graphic novel. This one didn’t have the touch of fantasy like The Storm in the Barn did, but I still loved it.

Great art, but the lettering was distracting.

Beautiful book and a quick read. I wish the plot/dialogue were as rich as the illustrations.

I actually forgot this was about Buster Keaton until I was pretty far into the book (the subtitle's not on the cover - just the title page). Which, I think, worked to the books advantage.

It's a relatively chill story about a kid growing up in Michigan, who meets a bunch of vaudeville performers taking their break at a retreat center on the (great) lake. There are some darker themes, but most of it is pretty relaxed. Or, at least, I relaxed after I realized the impetus for the story.

Beautiful illustrations, as per norm for Phelan. Although his speech bubbles stick out like a sore thumb in a bad way - need to start integrating them better, dude!

Beautiful graphic novel about Buster Keaton's summers in Bluffton, Michigan near Lake Michigan, told through the eyes of a fictional narrator, Henry. I envision this one making the rounds during award season.

A fun graphic novel that takes you into the work of early 20th century Vaudeville and Buster Keaton.
