The Unsung Hero
4 Stars

On a mission to rescue an ambassador's wife, Lt.Commander Tom Paoletti receives a life-threatening head injury and is forced to take recuperation leave. While at home, he is reunited with an old flame, and also spots someone he believes to be an international terrorist. Is he right? And if so, who or what is the target?

This first installment in the Troubleshooters series involves an ensemble cast of characters and a complex plot of multiple storylines. While some of the threads are more detailed than others, Brockmann handles them all with aplomb and also manages to include several exciting and well-written action scenes.

In addition to the main second-chances romance between Kelly and Tom, there are two additional stories. The first is a sweet relationship between Tom's niece, Mallory, and David, the adorably geeky boy who wants to draw her. The second is a heart-wrenching love triangle between Tom's uncle, Kelly's father, Charles, and a woman in the French resistance during World War II.

Overall, this is an engaging start to the series and it will be interesting to see where Brockmann takes her characters next.

too 2000s and i cant deal w dysfunctional families

What a great start to a series. Not many romance books make me cry. This one had me tearing up. Loved all the seperate story lines in this book. Tom and Kelly, Charles and Joe, and David and Mallory. I know that the author brings back certain people in futher books in the series. I can't wait to read more.

I ended up enjoying this much more than I expected. Now that I've started the second book in this series, I recognize that Suzanne Brockmann's successful formula seems to include a combination of multiple love stories tied together with World War II stories and imminent terrorist threats. It requires some suspension of disbelief (and acceptance of the noble military idea) but I enjoy the characters, and I especially appreciate that Brockmann includes elderly characters' stories/wisdom.

After many DNFs as per usual, I started this book and what kept me reading is that the author writes similarly to Susan Elizabeth Phillips, in the way that she writes the side characters' side of the story, their inner dialogue, not just the main characters'. In fact, what made this book shine was the relationship between Tom's niece and introvert comic book artist, the side characters that I was rooting for more than the main characters.

   | The Unsung Hero is what military romance done right. The story is not inly focusing on Tom and Kelly, but 3 generation of love. Miss Brockmann gives each of her characters life and solid character development.

The plot coming together very nicely. The chemistry between Tom and Kelly not only hot but also tender. I like when the hero becomes the weak one in the romance. Tom is not just brave, he is also tender and vulnerable when it comes to feeling.

Overall a very good story.

Romance. Suspense. Multiple perspectives.

Story: Tom is a Navy SEAL returning hone after sustaining a head injury on his last mission. He'll reconnect with his father, his father's best friend and girl next door Kelly.

Language: A romance told in multiple perspectives - male, female, young, old, present and past. Set in coastal New England, sometime in the 1990's.

Characters: Tom is 36 and questioning himself. Charles and Joe are WWII vets. Kelly is a pediatrician, taking care of her dying father.

Not the best suspense novel and dated in its gender roles, but i enjoyed the multiple perspectives and storylines.

I really loved the beginning. The Tom and Kelly story was good, and I liked David and Mallory. I wasn't really into the WWII story at all. And the terrorist plot wasn't as exciting as the mystery/action of the later books I've read in the series. I kept hoping it would pick up, and it never quite got where I hoped it would go.

3.5 for story and narration, B-

This is pretty typical Suzanne Brockmann. It is entertaining and the narration was pretty good, but nothing super special or memorable. In fact, I realized after the first chapter that I'd read this years ago but couldn't remember too much about it.

This is a re-read for me and I’m glad to say that this series holds up even 15 years later. You get a little bit of history, lots of steamy romance, and characters that you fall in love with. Highly recommend this series 😁
