Nothing quite like a true crime story from the perspective of the con man- White Collar is my favorite TV show of all time, and this guy is basically a real life Neal Caffrey. With the exception of getting stuck in French prison, this guy lived a pretty sweet life for a couple years, flying everywhere with ease due to his ability to cash any check and get an unlimited amount of money. Who knows how much of his story is actually true- I mean, you definitely can't exactly expect 100% honesty from this guy- but 100% of this story was entertaining.

Even if half of it is completely made up, it's still a really fun read. Was he really the marvelous consist he makes himself out to be? Or is he just a really good story teller?
A friend and I went to see this play a few weeks ago and I was surprised by how good it was. I had to read the book to see how much of it was true compared to the movie/musical. It was so fascinating! I can't believe what we got away with. Pilot, Pediatrician, Medical Doctor, check fraud of millions of dollars. I'm sure he couldn't get away with it these days, but still definitely worth a read. I didn't give it a higher rating because it was a really great story but ended too soon in his life to be inspiring for me. He was definitely a clever con man. I would have liked to learn more about after he got out of prison and all the work he did for the FBI his books he authored etc. Still a fun read!

Overall, sort of disappointing. I know it's supposed to be loosely based on Frank's life, but the whole thing felt fake to me. It is written more like a fiction book and it doesn't have much substance to it. Frank objectifies woman to a gross degree, and sleeping with as many of them as possible seems almost as important to him as swindling people out of their money.
I truly believe Frank was a pathological liar who wanted to be a big time Con Artist like what he wrote about, but most of what's in this book is an embellishment. He was petty crook who didn't really do most of what's in this book. He also seemed surprised when he was caught and that every country he scammed wanted to extradite him and take him to court?? And that some of the women he scammed and lied to were willing to turn him in when they saw him again??
He's an extreme narcissist who thought he was above the law and better than everyone else. I think "charismatic" is what he was supposed to come off as, what he thought he was being, or how he was perceived by others, but I disagree. He was a stuck up, annoying, narcissistic manipulator.
This was the August read for my book group. Catch Me if You Can is (IMO) a great movie! But I think of it as an action movie, not so much as based on a true story, and I'm glad DiCaprio is not an annoying ego maniac like the Frank in this book. I don't say this much, but in this case, the movie is better.

Whether it is 100% true or the con continues with some embellishment, this book held my interest. The number of chance meetings of those in the airline, banking, and printing industries seems a little too good to be true, but maybe I'm wrong. Regardless, Frank Abagnale Jr clearly has enough exposure and experience to ultimately lead to a career in security and fraud consultancy.
