Let zmajeva sam prvi put čitao baš davno, sigurno pre 20-ak godina, i tada me knjiga nije oduševila.

I enjoyed this book, but some aspects just didn't sit well with me. Maybe it's just me and it's actually awesome, but I'll go ahead and share my thoughts.

The world was very unique and cool, and especially the way the dragons are so different from your standard ones, and the idea of between. I can see the influence on future dragon/rider novels. But I could have used some more straight-up explanation of what the Threads were in the beginning, because it remains a pretty foggy idea until about halfway through the book despite being the main conflict.

The writing is... good-ish, but sort of distracting. There are a lot of unnecessarily obscure words - and I'm an English major, I love that vocabulary, but I found it to be just too much here. Another thing that bothered me was that characters tend to go through a whole range of angry-confused-triumphant emotions while dialogueing without a lot of reason that was apparent to me. Outside of that, the writing flows pretty well.

I also couldn't really get attached to the characters. Lessa is sympathetic because of her tragic backstory and you can really see her desire for freedom and power, but she can also be a jerk to people who care about her; sometimes she regrets this and sometimes she doesn't. I can see where's she's coming from - of course she's frustrated because no one's listening to her or giving her agency a lot of the time, but she doesn't seem to care much for others and does a lot of antagonizing. F'lar is... angry a lot of the time and kind of physically abusive towards Lessa and I didn't like how the narration treats that like it's okay. I guess their relationship works in a rivalry sort of way but I wasn't really feeling it.

I'm not going to hold a book written in 1968 to the same feminist standards I'd hold a modern one to, but I'd have liked to see more female characters, especially ones that Lessa is friends with and not being jealous or contemptuous of. I enjoyed the Queen's Wing at the end and that helped make up for how male-dominated the rest of the book is, though I suppose the social structure of dragons and Weyrs have a lot to do with it as well. Either way it does an interesting take on some sexism themes which is pretty sweet.

Overall I'd still recommend reading it. It was a pretty cool book with a unique take on dragons and social relations between men and women. I'd also like to note that my edition (maybe newer ones are better about this) has cute little illustrations and a back cover blurb that seem to market it to kids but I don't think the gender themes, politics, and sexual content would be very appropriate for a younger audience.

I don’t know if I’ll read all of these, but I’m glad to have experienced this classic fantasy world of McCaffrey’s.

Hardly anything happens, simplistic writing style and dialogs. No idea who recommended this anymore, but I think I'll skip part 2
