This is definitely a YA style book. The content and the ways it reads are good for a younger audience.
That being said, I loved how flawlessly Moreno-Garcia wove in Indigenous stories throughout the novel. I learned so much about the Mayan people and their worldview through this book. It's truly beautiful

This book read a lot like a YA novel to me. While the storyline could be interesting, everything felt very surface level.

This is a simple fairy tale novel that gives a good intro into Mexican/Mayan mythology. However, I feel like it was a bit shallow in its story telling at times, making the story feel jumbled and a bit rushed. I wish that characters stories/motives were developed and explored more; maybe in ways that highlight the character as a whole rather than just as a means to move the story along. It often felt like the book was going in many directions at once.
Despite all of this, it was an easy read with a mostly satisfying ending.

Prose is well executed, plot and characters interesting.
the ending left something to be desired. I’m okay without a “happily ever after” but I don’t know exactly what justifies the ending here.

Man, this book was a slog for me. The ending was good and satisfying but the entire rest of the book was just kind of boring.

Like others have said, I found this book slow in the beginning, which was fine with me because I was listening to it to fall asleep at night. But somewhere around halfway, it suddenly picked up and I became very invested. The world building in particular was captivating. The ending didn't work for me, but not because it was bad - it was just a personal preference thing. Overall, I enjoyed it and I'm glad I gave it a chance. I would gladly read this author again (although I might try to vet the story's ending first).
