After Kendra Tierney recommended this book, I was on the hunt to find it, and what a treasure it proved to be! The storytelling, the illustrations, the lesson, and happy ending, it's perfect. Well worth the hunt.

On one hand, I'm not sure what a child would think of this fairy tale, but as an adult reader I'm struck by how the bearskinner escapes his own wretchedness.

A great telling of a story that says through perseverance and helping other people we can thwart the devil and find happiness. BEAUTIFULLY illustrated!

A lovely retelling, haunting illustrations - overall a fabulous addition to the "nice and creepy Grimm stories" shelf. I loved the use of shadows in the illustrations. It's a slight story, but packs a good punch for the spareness of the telling. Well worth taking a look at.

This is a REALLY GOOD BOOK. When I finished it, I had the sort of breathless feeling that only the very best books give me.

Easily the best retelling of this story I've ever read. The gruesome details contrasting with the beautiful moments of kindness are a showcase of everything a good fairytale should be. I listened to this on audio, but I bet the illustrations in the physical edition make the reading experience even better.

A dark fairy tale indeed, brought to life with appropriately gritty illustrations. This one isn't for the faint of heart, but it is beautiful.

Elementary. Beautiful retelling of a classic tale. Creepy and strange, but in a good way :-)
