It probably is too much to say this is a full blown satire of the Sherlock Holmes novels, but as someone who hates that character and the books he's in, this felt like such a welcome correction. I absolutely love the concept of a bored rich guy inserting himself into crimes just for the sport of it, and I instantly fell in love with the hyperactive, almost slapstick dialogue throughout. The prose in general is a constant joy, and the mystery itself is written about as well as one can be. The only complaint I have is with its exhaustive confessional ending. Its leaden and hand-holding tone made me feel like I was accidentally reading an explanation of the novel and not the novel itself. That aside, I'm excited to read more in this series.

Did not like the writing. Don’t even care enough to look up the ending. Lord Peter is annoying

Oh, what is not to love about Lord Peter Wimsey's VERY FIRST CASE? Or any of the wonderful Sayers books? I am surprised and delighted I hadn't read this one before.

Classic cozy mystery. Scratches that itch perfectly well

I have a hard time to put away a book I don’t like, to stop reading it feels like admitting defeat. I know that I won’t finish it but I won’t admit it and I try to read, for months, and then I give it up.

We were watching a quiz show my dad and I and he got the question “Who wrote the books about Lord Peter Wimsey?” right and I was pretty impressed by that. Dad said he knew because grandma used to read them. So I wanted to read these books, but I won’t because the first one was putting me to sleep. I would love to have a cup of tea with my grandma and ask her what it is about the books that she likes, maybe she could convince me to give it another try? I wish I had known my grandma better, I wish she was still around. I think I would have appreciated her more now when I’m older.

Fun banter, a surprisingly convoluted mystery (in a good way) and delightful depth of character. I hear such good things about the later books and look forward to reading more. The murderer’s final confession was too convenient, but I was pleasantly surprised by the level of medical details, in which the gory descriptions were not glossed over!
