Really enjoyed this Cinderella retelling because it kept pieces of the stories we know, yet brought in new folklore that made this a different story.
I really liked this retelling of Cinderella's story, alternating chapters between one of the rat coachmen's perspectives and Cinderella's. We learn that the rat is actually a Prince named Char, and that his family have been tied to Cinderella's for generations.
I really hate rats, but I liked this story. I feel like that says a lot. I was rooting for Prince Char the whole time, and I liked how it ended up. Lovely.

When I heard of this book I wasn't too keen on reading it. I mean RATS. But then I heard it was a Cinderella re-telling and I couldn't help but want to read it. I quickly added it to my TBR and bit my nails while I waited for it.
Everyone thinks they know the real story of Cinderella, but everyone knows only what they WANT you to know. The "real" story can be found in-between these pages. It tells about Cinderella and the rat who is in love with her and how everything changes the night of the ball.
In one word, this could definitely be described as cute. It had a great cast of characters and some trruly funny moments. I also thought it was cute because it gave an almost exact re-telling of Cinderella. As far as the ending, it was a lot better. I liked that it did give some variety on the tale.
But then again, that may also be it's downfall. It seemed that there wasn't too much different about the re-telling for it to still be entertaining. I wanted to see more abut the rats and more about how they conducted business and treated their kingdom and more. It just seemed to be too much of the same story.
But I did like that this story was also filled with some really great vocabulary. It will be great for children to learn some of the harder words (like sovereign and more. Not sure if that's a middle grade word, but I don't remember learning that until later.... I think.) It will do a 5th or 6th grade child well to read this and learn some words they may have not heard of before.
This book wasn't the most entertaining, but was definitely still good in it's own right. I can see myself suggesting this to teachers and children looking for princess stories. It's a solid re-telling with a surprising ending that will leave them feeling "Happy Forever After."

The Rat Prince is a Cinderella retelling following the perspectives of Cinderella and the Rat Prince Char. Prince Char has watched Cinderella get bullied by her stepmother, and Cinderella enjoys Char’s friendship, even if he’s a rat. She plans to defy her stepmother as soon as possible, but she can’t leave her memory-addled father behind. Together, through a series of mishaps, they just might be able to save the kingdom.
The unique take on the Cinderella story is super fun, and the imagery is excellent. The rats are hilarious, and Char makes a very charming prince. :) I like how Cinderella is brave and compassionate. Her backbone is clear, and it’s easy to feel sympathy for her situation. The twists at the end are a little predictable, but still very exciting.
While I enjoy the characterization in the first part of the book, the dialogue gets a little over the top towards the second half, once everyone is at the ball. While Char’s love for Cinderella has been there from the beginning, Cinderella’s sudden romantic love for him (while he’s turned into a human) escalates really quickly, and it feels just a bit too dramatic. However, those who love the quick romance in the original Cinderella will likely appreciate this and enjoy the sweetness.
Overall, The Rat Prince is a hilarious take on the Cinderella tale with adventure, romance, magic, and more.

(Actual rating: 4.5* rounded up due to my love for rats)
I actually really loved this book, and I thought it was incredibly creative and imaginative. I think if I read this at around 10-12 it would have been one of my favourite books. Even now as an adult I fell in love with the world of the rats and their kingdom as well as Char and Rose, and how intelligent and dedicated they both were.

I really liked this updated version of Cinderella, partially because the main female character wasn’t your stereotypical helpless princess looking for a prince. (Also, I could swear the author threw a couple of Game of Thrones allusions in there.) All in all, and enjoyable read that I’d put in my classroom library!
A quick, cute little read. Probably aimed for a younger teen audience, a simple story that still offered moments of cleverness.
