Once again, Aarons pulls things out at the end. It makes for a satisfying story that originally seemed to be grinding down an overworked path. That is, it began with the story of Durell rescuing Deirdre Padgett, his long time girlfriend, who, as the Assignment series develops becomes more and more irritating. Fortunately, the background tale about an American astronaut mistakenly come down in the mountains of what sounds like Transylvania takes over. And that story is satisfying enough, especially as Aarons experiments with the form of the story a tad by flashing forward and then backfilling events, as he shifts from different characters' perspectives. It all ends up being a good enough book to get the reader to plunge on to the next in the series.
