Chrysanthemum has always loved her name, even though it is long. When some of the other children at school make fun of her name, she grows sad. Her parents and her teacher comfort her. Chrysanthemum's teacher even names her new baby Chrysanthemum. The book features themes of being proud to be yourself and the importance of kindness to others. The book would be appropriate to share as a read aloud with children between three and five.

I love this book. It is so cute. It makes me want to name one of my kids Chrysanthemum.

sweet

Chrysanthemum was born loving her name. But on her first week of school some mean girls at school tease her and make her wish for a new, shorter name.

This book teaches kids about accepting yourself for who you are, no matter what others say. It's not only a great book to read to little kids, but it's a great mentor text for older kids to write about.

One of the best! It teaches children to love and respect themselves and be proud of their differences.

The theme for one of my book clubs this month is "childhood favorites," so I gathered an assortment of some of the books I remember loving as a wee bean. This book resonated with me then and now. My name is not nearly as long or uncommon as Chrysanthemum, but in the '90s there were not nearly as many Caseys around. I was mocked for having "a boy's name" and called Cassie, a name I truly detest, constantly. This book shows the unfortunate power kids have to destroy other kids' self-esteem, even with relatively tame bullying. Fortunately it also shows the power of a cool teacher to turn things around. One little detail that tickled me so much was Chrysanthemum's father reading self-helpy parenting books in the background whenever Chrysanthemum came home beaten down by her peers' teasing. An involved dad who is educating himself on how best to support his child?! We love to see it.

A great read aloud about embracing yourself
