This was great! The Calm Before the Storm gave me some peace of mind to Aren and Lara's future after the end of The Traitor Queen. Although it is hard to say goodbye to these characters, this short story helped and made me even more excited for the fourth book!
I honestly thought this was going to be more of a novella than bonus chapters but it was definitely not enough content to be a novella. It was a nice little read that didn't provide too much new information but it was nice to see Lara again as the narrator. It would potentially spoil a bit of book 3 but it wouldn't be detrimental if it was read before

Okay, but hear me out. Could we get a short story of these two per every new duology in The Bridge Kingdom series, just so we get to see Aren and Lara officially (hopefully) crowning their Happily Ever After? Because this story was beautiful, but it also unlocked a deep desire to see them having everything they want. Everything.

though i loved the traitor queen, i felt like the ending was a bit rushed — and moreover, disappointed that we didn’t get any kind of long-term peek into how genuinely difficult it would be to rebuild after the events of TTQ. these bonus chapters cleared up a lot on that front!
and now i’m foaming at the mouth for the sequel to the inadequate heir. ✨

This was such a fun novella to read between The Inadequate Heir and The Endless War. I loved getting to see Lara and Aren again, and see how things played out after the events of The Traitor Queen. I am sad to see Lara and Aren go as main characters, but excited to read the conclusion of Keris and Zarrah's story.
