It got a bit weird towards the end but overall a very solid enjoyable Black Mirror episode.
of all the reality show–themed stories I’ve read recently, three in july alone, the family experiment amazed me the most.
set in a near-future world shared with john marrs’s other sci-fi thrillers (the one and the passengers, both of which i’ve read), this book feels more like a dark social experiment than a traditional thriller. the concept is both chilling and fascinating: a reality show where couples raise virtual children in the metaverse over a condensed nine-month period, all while being watched by an international audience.
while reading, i found myself slipping into the role of a viewer—judging the contestants’ choices, questioning their motives, and wondering how the virtual children could respond so realistically. i even asked myself: what if i were in their shoes? what would i choose if i were the winner?
overall, this was an epic and compelling read that left me thinking long after i turned the final page.

I really tried. The storyline could have been decent. I don’t know if it’s the writing or the narrator, but I could not focus on the story to get even a little invested. I don’t normally not finish a book even if it’s not the best use of my time. However, with this one I found myself even avoiding the thought of having to listen before I could move on to the next book. I had to put it down.
