I found "The One" to be easier to listen to and get through, however, I really liked how it wrapped up toward the end. Love the concept and subtle ties to his other books.

John Marrs comes up with the most interesting sci fi with great concepts and characters.
Loved it!

3.5 stars

I love a sci fi world which is fairly similar to ours but has a few tweaks which shows us more about the human condition so this was a really fun read for me. Really fun and interesting premise about the future of AI and the ethical questions it poses. The beginning was a little confusing with so many characters - it took me a while to figure out who everyone was and their backstory. I felt that the drama was a little heavy handed but overall thought it delivered in terms of payoff.

Didn't expect it to tie so much together like a mystery which I feel generally neutral about. However, even though I like learning about what happens to side characters at the end, I think the book did a little too much with the end tying up loose ends so it dragged a bit / left nothing to the imagination.

I also think some of his worldbuilding might have been set up in other books so was a little confusing in that respect. I will probably read his other books because though it wasn't perfectly crafted boy was this fun.

This book is mind-blowing. I'll most likely be thinking about this for a long time. I'll hand it to John Marrs. His speculative thrillers are chilling and show what could happen if the power of AI falls into the wrong hands.

DID NOT FINISH

It was too many characters to keep up with for me and they were all introduced quickly. Listened to it on Hoopla

The Truman Show X The Sims X A.I Artificial Intelligence (2001)

I have only read “The One” so I haven’t really experienced the full blast ride of this whole sci-fi dystopian(?) universe.

It started great for me, but 80% it just felt rushed and I was just eager to know what had happened to River. #LetRiverRun, won’t lie and say I don’t have any favourite.

I was obsessed with “The Truman Show” and the concept of watching a 24/7-live stream reality show do fascinated me,the uncut, the tension, the drama, mixed with Metaverse, basically a hooked line and sinker moment for me. (I had a phased where I was so obsessed with The Sims, to the point that my sister and I would alternate our sleep schedule so we could play Sims 24/7.)

But the main reason why “The Family Experiment” intrigued me, is that it seems plausible (imo) to actually happen in the near future. (Not the dark side of it though, maybe hm). It has been an interest of mine ever since I watched A.I movie on whether it’s humane to dispose child A.I after they run its course. And although, the phase of the MetaChild were escalated, you can have attachment with them.

So when tragedy kept on happening, I was literally foaming in the mouth. The bits with Hudson, had my inkling of his past but the climax was such a downer. It felt like “Here” and slapped some paper to my face kind of moment. Everything just felt outrageous at that point, like forcing unmatched puzzles.

So to sum it up (I have a tendency to yap online cause I have social anxiety irl haha), it was a strong start bland ending. Maybe my priority wasn’t right, maybe I was rooting for the wrong team, but it felt like Dumbledore’s Greater Good moment.

Way too much going on.
