Der Thron von Melengar by Michael J. Sullivan

This was really more an adventure book than a fantasy book. We've got two wrongly accused and highly skilled thieves, who are unwittingly wrapped up in a conspiracy, and who have these nasty consciences that seem to get them into trouble. It's not a new concept. But the book is a lot of fun nonetheless. It starts with a thieving job, goes directly into another job, a murder, and then the two main characters are suddenly mixed up in a royal conspiracy. This book is certainly not boring, as it is full of scene after scene after scene of action.

I might have liked this book better if it were longer, allowing the characters to be more fully developed in the midst of the action, and perhaps spending more time on the relationship between one of thieves and his girlfriend. The girlfriend was an interesting lady, of whom I did not see nearly enough. And I think I feel a little cheated at having experienced such a wonderful adventure without nearly enough romance. The story seems less fantastical without love having been an issue at all. In some ways, The Crown Conspiracy feels like a movie-adaptation of a book--abbreviated. All the good action remains, but I missed out on the character development and side stories.

Although this book is the first in a series of six, it stands alone. I am no hurry to read the second book, but I will definitely get around to it eventually.

Not the most inventive or thought-provoking fantasy I've ever read (this makes me want to read Guy Gavriel Kay again, actually), but it's enjoyable and engaging (and fairly short). Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Okay maybe I'm biased because I listened to the Dramatizatiok of this, but I thought this was really fun. I liked the characters and the action was really fun. And I just. I liked it. A lot :)

Had I not read the prequel novels first, I likely would have DNF this. Because I read the prequels, I had more context and it felt like I was jumping into another adventure with two good friends. The writing was certainly a little rough but it was his first book and everything felt like it was on fast forward. I know this will get resolved later as the prequels are superbly written. Anyone that happens to read this review, go read the prequel novels first.

Solidly okay. You can tell it was self-published originally because it could use an editor. There’s the core of a nice lil fantasy jaunt, but it needs some polish to tighten up the plot, fix some stilted dialogue, and resolve some silly oversights here and there (a character who is a monk with perfect memory and has read every book in the monastery, which by the way is known for hosting travelers, somehow doesn’t know that horses come in different colors? Honestly.)

I also have a bit of a pet peeve with situations where the narration is like “this stunt they’re pulling off is so clever!!” when it’s actually either blindingly obvious or incredibly unrealistic (or in some cases, both).

But (1) there were some funny lines, (2) sometimes the action actually was clever and (3) I heard the series gets better as it goes. So, I’m willing to give the next one a shot.

Enjoyed it through GraphicAudio. Cast did a great and convincing job, sound effects on point. Will be continuing this series.

I found this book on Fantasty Book Critic, and then headed over here to read the reviews. Then went to the author's website to buy the books (bought one, two and three), as finding them online isn't a possibility right now. It was definitely an impulse buy, and it's one I don't regret.

The story is fast paced and keeps you hooked. The characters are well written. I really liked Myron, his childlike nature and curiosity made things funny, he also evokes the most emotion/sympathy from the reader. The only one I didn't find well written was Gwen - she's only a minor character (with hints at a larger and important past with Royce), but for someone who owns her own business, a good chunk of a the Artisan Row and Lower Quarter, and a prostitute, she seemed far to soft. But maybe that is only because we haven't seen enough of her yet. Or maybe it's because we've only seen her with Royce, who she clearly has a soft spot for.

My thoughts for the next books: Royce is not fully human, he definitely has some elf in him - or something else. And Hadrian, I'm pegging him for the long lost Novron heir, and a past that Royce isn't even aware of.

I'm looking forward to starting the second one!
