Starting off Irish Month, with this time capsule from Donegal.

The book is set in the backdrop of the divorce referendum in 1995. We are introduced to the couples of Ardglas who apologies for the pun seem to be coasting along in their marriages, that is except for Colette. She is a threat to the status quo, living alone, drinking in pubs alone, leaving her husband, reading in church. She represents this new age of woman, something that will become the norm once divorces are legalised in Ireland and something the community just can’t seem to stomach.

We lay witness to the destitute rationalisation of staying in marriages, ugly anoraks and all. The corruption of the local TD and the church and how in order to save a marriage something else needs to be sent away.

Genuinely got sucked right in.

Thought this would be a complex interest literature Ireland book given who is the author, but it feels more like a soft women's fiction.
