Beautifully crafted world and addicting characters that grow on you even if you don’t want them to. Inspired me in my own creative endeavors and will stick with me for a long time! Highly recommended!

It's good! I enjoyed the author's sense of humor, goofy, flavorful. I got very attached to the characters.

3.5 stars - i really really enjoyed this and ordered the next in The Locked Tomb trilogy within ten minutes of finishing it, but there were bits of pacing i didn't love, and i would have liked to have spent more time spent in gideon's head re. harrow in the last 150 or so pages.

magical competitions are one of my favorite tropes ever, but this had the most boring one i’ve read so far.

i was bored the whole time, characters blended together and were hard to distinguish, gideon was childish and immature and harrow annoying and edgy.

what doesn’t make sense is the whole enemies to lovers applied here… like they literally hated each other and had no chemistry whatsoever but in the turn of a page they were in love? let’s be for fucking real

i wanted to dnf it so bad but i have a physical copy so i forced myself to finish it, i had to skim the last 50 pages and the ending wasn’t even satisfying.

i’m giving it 2 starts solely because the magic system is very cool, that’s it

  • HOO BOY.
  • i put off reading this series for ages because, well, you know how the brain goblins are. in fact they did their job so perfectly that they timed my descent into obsession right on top of finals!! when all i wanted to do was become all-consumed by my newest blorbos!!
  • all personal spewage aside, what a no-holds-barred, authentically bizarre, well crafted story. reading it made me feel like i was watching one of those grandfather clocks swing back and forth: you know what’s going to happen, every second and every hour, and YET. also whatever’s going on inside will turn your brain to mush. i have so much to say and not Nearly enough of the right words, my god.
  • i think above all -- for me at least -- it’s the richness of this book that’s completely taking over my mind. everything is so thought out and built with time and love and care, from the silly memes to classical references to archetypal resonance
  • also it was an insane reading experience for a former premed student. shoutout to the cadaver labs for giving me Very clear pictures of so much happening all the time. i am eating all my metacarpals and never recovering
