I'm not entirely sure what it was about this book, but if felt like coming home. It might be my new favorite Sarah Addison Allen book - MAYBE even better than Garden Spells. But I have to reread Garden Spells before I can be entirely sure.

I love reading Sarah Addison Allen's books. She has such a great story telling ability. I couldn't wait to finish the book, but didn't want it to end either! There are so many great quotes in this book - I may have to read it again right now! Thank you for again lifting my spirits and making me believe in magic again.

Maybe my problem with this one is that I listened to it and the reader's voice was somewhat irritating to me - that could be my issue. But overall, I just did not resonate with this book. I felt it was predictable and fluff. I hardly felt there was one character I could relate to - the plot was rather frustrating with no surprises as well. Maybe a good beach read? I don't know - just didn't cut it for me.

It centers around wealthy southern women that come from a line of very weak women. They seem to want to turn themselves around and be stronger than their predecessors, but it is hard for them to overcome. Eby and her niece, Kate, have both lost their husbands and must decide to pick up and carry on - both in different ways. The story centers around Lost Lake - a "resort" that Eby owns and runs in the deep south. The lives of many are brought together at Lost Lake and they learn from each other in their stays at the Lake.

As always, Sarah Addison Allen wrote a lovely story with interesting characters and a touch of magical realism that makes it a bit more fun to read.  This story really was about what and where is home, how the people we love make it a real home, and how to process loss in a way that helps you find yourself instead of lose yourself.  I absolutely loved the little girl Devin and her free spirit, and I thought the visitors to Lost Lake were all people I would enjoy meeting.  Long relationships and short relationships with lots of meaning and emotion.

I have loved everything by Allen I've read, and this book did not disappoint. I love how she weaves charming characters and lovely settings into high-stakes situations, without building an uncomfortable amount of tension. While reading the book, I found myself wanting to check into a cabin at the Lost Lake and join the story.
