Andrew Joseph White has done it again. His works always do an amazing job at representing the trans and all lgqbtqia community. 

This tale is set in modern times and seems liss mystical than those I've read of his before. Miles is a true champion and oh so human. I was rooting for him the whole way through. This book tugged at my heart and reawakened a sense of justice and hope for my self. Even though it is a work of fiction, Compound Fracture does an excellent job at showing the beautiful and the monstrous parts of finding yourself and showing who you truly are to your community. Amazing work.

First thing I’ve read by Andrew Joseph White, and it won’t be the last. An unapologetically queer story of self discovery, generational trauma and rebelling against corrupt authority. A bit darker and more gore-y than I expected for a YA level novel, but great overall.

Compound Fracture is jaw-droppingly good and GRUESOME / difficult read so would only recommend to certain people. But the commentary on humanity being forced into cycles of violence based on systems of oppression yet also are condemned for their actions was so tastefully done. Best trans, autistic, and queer rep I’ve ever seen.  4/5 only for the sake it’s very intense but it has to be!

Main context for the SA content

miles (the main character) in the beginning is assaulted, it isn’t totally confirmed but implied, by a group of teenage boys. It is not written in real time at ALL but the boys catching the miles then he passes out and wake in the hospital. He questions if he was assaulted and that’s it.

WHAT IN THE FUCKITY FUCK! (Also this continues my streak of finishing AJ White books in 4 days)

Regular Review Style:

1. Noah's plan to get Miles's family to turn on him was downright evil and a terrifying prospect

2. I damn near cried when Miles's dad used his name for the first time

3. No step on snek is iconic

4. MY FAVORITE AUTHOR WROTE AN ARO CHARACTER YIPPEE!!!

5. Miles is innocent, he was doing what he needed to survive

6. You just lost the game

7. THE DOG LIVES! YIPPEE! (However the description of what was in the dog video was horrifying)

8. Honestly, Mr. White (AJ White? White? Andrew Joseph White? I never know how to refer to authors in reviews) is my biggest inspiration as an author, I'm currently outlining and writing a few books and I don't think I would if I never read HFWU. I can't wait to read his next YA book (sorry this got sappy)

Wow wow WOW Andrew Joseph White’s reading style is absolutely addictive i am so obsessed with the other two books he’s written and his new one was no exception !!! The level of depth and horror and grit this man writes with is absolutely terrifying in the best way possible. 12/10 for AJW what a talent, cannot wait to see what else he comes out with !
