This book, also like the other books, felt comfortable and safe, even when things got more serious. I think it felt so safe because big, important, complicated thoughts are put into words perfectly, even the upsetting stuff. Especially the upsetting stuff.
Miles' narration sounds just like someone talking directly to you. Just having a casual conversation.
This book is scary and tense and relatable and funny and comforting and just plain good.

Emotional and raw and heartbreaking and heartwarming.
ETA January 31, 2025: Compound Fracture by Andrew Joseph White takes place in a small town with a long history of violence and uneven power dynamics. It’s an in-depth exploration of identity, community, family, and the horrors experienced by those who don’t fit the norm. Our main character, Miles, a trans young man, confronts the long-held prejudices against his family as well as a long-running feud. Will he perpetuate the violence or find a way to break free? It’s intense and emotional and difficult and raw--but ultimately it has a kernel of hope.
I do think that it's an important book to read, but it also contains a lot of topics and descriptions that might be difficult for some readers, so I highly recommend checking content warnings.
