It goes a different direction from AJW's previous books. While this is probably more true to him, and I appreciate the diversity and the fresh subject matter, I just didn't really like it in comparison to his other books. As a lifelong city-folk, I appreciated his depiction of a world I really don't relate to with rural Appalachian and how he humanizes both the good and the bad. Less horrific than I expected. While it is supernatural in the sense that Miles sees the ghost of an ancestor, it didn't feel as essential to the plot. The true horror was society, how
a blood feud would play out for so long and how the Davies' influence was so insidious. How it was clearly about to continue in the son.
While frightening, wouldn't really call it horror.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. It is amazing. Not just amazing for YA. Simply amazing. I really hope that this book gets into the hands of all who can relate to it, as well as to those who can't, because it is that life-altering/life-saving. The work that went into this is apparent: the historical research, the family research, the research into autism. The book's plot was organized very well and allowed each of these elements to shine. I'm so impressed by this! I just finished the audiobook a few minutes ago, and I have chills.

Love love LOVE when characters get mutilated by the plot. Physical altercation? Irreversible physical consequences!

This book y'all. One of the roughest but most relevant I've read. Not for the faint of heart but I think would benefit most people to read (felt the same about The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by the same author, but that one is historical-paranormal and this is contemporary with only a minor bend to paranormal). Technically YA but it really doesn't feel like YA.

The way it played out might have been somewhat predictable, but still felt it was executed well. Class/unions, identity/gender, family ties, expectations, autism/neurodivergence, Appalachia, the opioid epidemic, acab, generational violence... Js I think you should add it to your reading list. The narration was well done too (that's my preferred format but it was ... Visceral, made me incredibly uncomfortable at points).
