Though I have loved other Holly Black books, this one did not appeal to me. It was darker than the others, but without any punch. Kind of middling. I found some of the scene transitions abrupt so if I wasn't paying super close attention, then I got lost on where the characters were. To me, this illustrates that something is lacking.

I haven't read this book in years. Loved it back then though.
Edit: I still like it in 2023, It just isn't as strong anymore. 3.5 * for nostalgia, great faeries and a gay character that doesn't feel like an afterthought.

This was the novel that got me into reading in high school so it's hard to not give it 5 stars. I agree with other who have reviewed this book though, just because you liked The cruel prince doesn't mean you will like this. The main character from this does make a cameo in the cruel prince series.

I think I saw a review that described this as the blueprint for Darkest Part of the Woods. There are definite similarities, but the characters make a major difference.
I would describe the idea of this book as “what if the manic pixie dream girl was actually a pixie?”
You’ve also got your dark prince, nerdy friend, mysterious origins…
I definitely didn’t like it as much as Cruel Prince, but it’s not fair to compare, since this is much more Urban Fantasy.
If you are a Folk of the Air fan, I would read it simply for more details on characters who show up in Cruel Prince and the world being built in general.
