The Latecomer

Audi version. Usually I give five stars to books I would read again. Lately I have been giving it to books I might not read again, but I really enjoyed the experience of reading it the first time. This book was like that. It’s a family drama that when I first started, I didn’t think I was going to like. But I held on a little and then I was hooked.

The arch of the story is wonderfully constructed. It’s well written. The characters have depth and believable struggles. I love the twists and unexpected moments. This book just had a lot of little pockets of detail that kept the storyline interesting and kinetic.

Usually I’m not really expecting to like long family drama stories, but I was surprised by this one.

This book was slow to get my attention but once it did ..WOW I was invested! I loved how everything tied together at the end too!

I don't usually love family dysfunction stories, but the Latecomer (the person in the story) made the whole book for me. I liked the characters and the story. It was just twisty enough and fun

That was fun - won’t change your life but quite entertaining, with some very satisfying twists/payoffs and a nice happy ending. Found myself sympathizing with Johanna, as a mom whose kids are growing up and who desperately wants those same kids to love each other (and their upbringing).

This book was one of my favorite 2022 reads. So many layers and the character development is beautifully woven into the story. I wish I could read it for the first time again.

What a book! It was so different from anything I’ve read before regarding family dynamics. I attached to it easily because of my New York jewishness and love of art but it was really the story-telling that pulled me in. I haven’t read a 5 star book in a bit so this rejuvenated me.

Just could not do this one. The characters just frustrated me. Their total lack of compassion and respect for family and their mother bothered me. It was hard to get through and I eventually just stopped. There are so many other books that the characters I’ve connected to and cared about. These just made me mad.
