I liked this family drama, but I didn't LOVE it.

I found some of the plot devices used to establish conflict unbelievable. (Two siblings go to the same college and each pretends the other literally doesn't exist?? Come on.) All in all, I found it a decent read though, and I'm aware that most other readers liked it more than I did.

This is a well-constructed family drama that explores relationships, racism, and the need for healing. I appreciated it a lot.

There were some aspects of this that I really enjoyed, but most that I did not. Lewyn is an endearing character who has stuck with me after several weeks of putting this book down. Sally as a character didn’t get much appreciation from me overall while I was reading the novel, but in the aftermath, I find that I liked her story arc. Harrison… hmm. Not a very likable character, during or after.
I think this author does a good job of making realistic personalities, albeit wildly unusual ones. But, as many other reviewers have noted, the writing is tedious to get through and I remain uncertain that the characters or story is really worth the time needed to engage with this book.

This book was a slog and for little payoff. Her prose is nice but just too drawn out for my liking

Enjoyed this after getting into it. I felt like it started slow, but then got much more interesting. I also always enjoy references to locations I’ve lived and this has Charlottesville, VA as a part of the storyline. Great read and thoughtfully provoking.

Sorry. I can’t read any more. I’m 100 pages in and nothing has happened. Well, that’s not strictly true. Nothing has happened several times, explained with multiple paragraphs of nothing, excruciatingly making sure you understand precisely what nothing occurred.

I've had this book a long time. I just had a hard time getting started on it.
I finally chose to check out the audiobook and tried it that way. Made it much easier to get through.
It's a long, drawn out, family drama. I think it could've gone deeper with the story. There was a lot of idea's and things going on, but it just seemed to not go anywhere.
I would've liked to delve deeper into each character, and to really understand the way they were they way they were. We heard so little about the Dad!
I liked the characters, just wish there was more of a plot/story to it.

I love a good plot twist in a book! I ended up loving characters I started out disliking.
