I want to give this book more stars but the only truly amazing part of it is the writing—which is spectacular.

The characters are unlikeable (except maybe Rochelle) and nothing happens in the the first 300 pages. It all felt completely unrealistic and disappointing and then you end it by wrapping it up in a beautiful little bow. Blech. No, thank you.

a near perfect book and a fantastic read! i was obsessed honestly from the beginning, and if it wasn’t a little long at times and didn’t dip a bit in the middle, i’d give it 5 stars. but i love a read about interesting and messy family dynamics and this delivered ten fold. i am just amazed with the character development here and the level of complex weaving the author did with the story and the relationship dynamics. every thing in this book that was interesting or even unassuming had 10 more layers of depth within it that was slowly unraveled. i am just completely amazed and in love with this book. i’ll have to read it again now that i understand the bigger picture and all its smaller counterparts. if you love interesting characters that feel incredibly human and real, don’t walk RUN to read this

300 pages of bleak emptiness + 100 pages of sappy picture-perfect unearned resolution.

The second book I've read this year about a slightly loathsome dysfunctional family, and again, something I really enjoyed (particularly when I switched from the paperback to the audiobook.) The first part, which gives the background on the parents, was just okay -- I actually considered abandoning the book because I didn't find either character very interesting. In the second part, though, the triplets begin to pursue their own paths, and things get much more layered and intriguing. The ending was a bit too pat for me, but on the whole, I thought it was a worthwhile read. I know I will continue to think about these characters (especially if I ever find myself on the Cornell campus....)
