At the beginning this book seemed huge and boring, but I insisted on reading and as the pages went by I started to be really interested in the story of the Oppenheimer triplets and everything that happened in between. It’s a story about family, about art, about living in NY, about growing up with siblings. It’s also a story about jealousy and rivalry, but you have to read everything to understand the complexity of the characters.

Things came together really nicely in the end but the pacing felt off.

The characters’ storylines were really interesting in the middle section — particularly Sally and Harrison.

Also enjoyed the focus on art and how it impacted the whole family, as well as learning a bit about art as well.

The cleaning out of houses & Roarke were of particular interest to me.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and certain bits and pieces I imagine will stick with me for a long time, but don’t know if I’ll read it again.

This was a very slow, meandering novel, focused on character development. I found the first few chapters hard to get into it, but once the triplets were sentient, it began to take off. The final third of The Latecomer was a nice payoff, but there was nothing especially riveting about it as a whole. If you’re looking for a quiet character study, I suggest giving the book a try.
