Bad Mormon

The reviews on this book are pretty negative but I thoroughly enjoyed it. However growing up in Idaho and having all my best friends in school be devout Mormons I’ve always had so many questions about how RHOSLC grappled with their faith while being on the show. I’m not even Mormon and I was like yo why are they wearing tank tops and swearing? Having heathers perspective I found very interesting. Also she gave WAY more details on what happens in the temple than I was expecting and that’s the kind of tea I read this book for. Was it life changing? No. But it was worth the listen for me.

“There was no way to be who I was and not inadvertently break the hearts of my family,” I felt this phrase deeply on a personal level. Stepping back from the beliefs you’ve been born and raised with your entire life, while everyone around you still believes, it’s heartbreaking and terrifying. All of your still believing friends view you as someone “other” and potentially dangerous, when you’re still the same person as before but with a bit less belief in you. This book was surprisingly relatable, and I admire Heather’s strength in becoming public with her story. I would not recommend this book to any still practicing LDS members as they will be intensely offended. Heather does not hold anything back. I could tell she wrote this book herself, and she did great with the audio narration.

This was kind of a rough read for me compared to other memoirs. I think that’s mostly because there were some writing moments that fell a little flat AND because I don’t think she spent enough time in the phase of her post-Mormon life!! She literally titled the book Bad Mormon and then (imo) didn’t spend enough time in the periods of life where she actively chose to do something different. LOVED the pictures included at the end though 😍

this was a nice pallet cleanser when a little life got to be too much.

I didn’t love the writing but it was a very light and easy read.
